Two-Day Hands-on Workshop on “Use of AI Tools in Research Writing”
The SPARK Team at Sri Lalithambigai Medical College and Hospital successfully conducted a two-day hands-on workshop on “Use of AI Tools in Research Writing” for postgraduate students from the pre-clinical, para-clinical, and clinical departments.
The workshop was designed to provide participants with practical training in the effective and ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI) throughout the research process. The programme combined expert guidance with live demonstrations and hands-on exercises, enabling participants to work directly with widely used AI-powered research platforms.
The workshop offered practical experience with NotebookLM, SciSpace, Zotero Reference Manager, PubMed for efficient literature search and article extraction, Gemini AI, and other AI-assisted research tools. Participants learned how to formulate research questions, perform comprehensive literature searches, organize and manage references, summarize scientific articles, critically appraise evidence, draft research proposals and manuscripts, generate tables and figures, and improve the quality and efficiency of scientific writing.
Special emphasis was placed on the responsible and ethical use of AI in research, including maintaining academic integrity, avoiding plagiarism, ensuring transparency in AI-assisted writing, and validating AI-generated outputs with scientific evidence. The sessions also introduced participants to best practices for integrating AI into systematic reviews, evidence synthesis, and manuscript preparation while preserving the originality and credibility of research.
The workshop witnessed enthusiastic participation from postgraduate students across the pre-clinical, para-clinical, and clinical disciplines. The interactive format, with real-time demonstrations and guided practical exercises, enabled participants to confidently apply these tools to their own research projects. The programme concluded with a discussion on the future of AI in medical research and its potential to enhance research productivity while upholding the highest standards of scientific integrity.
