- A DEXA scan also known as Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry is a painless, non-invasive scan that is used to assess osteoporosis.
- It is also used to assess fracture risk and monitor treatment effectiveness.
- A DEXA scan is usually recommended for post-menopausal women, older adults aged above 60, those with a family history of osteoporosis, people with conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and hyperthyroidism, anyone with a history of fractures of hip or spine and those individuals on long term steroid use.
- Central, Peripheral & Whole body DEXA are the types available.
- The scan lasts for about 10-30 minutes and results are usually available within few days.
