BRAIN EVOKED RESPONSE AUDIOMETRY(BERA)
This is widely performed for assessing hearing in Newborns. Hearing could be screened as early as 24 hours after birth .
Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA), also known as Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR), is a non-invasive, objective test used to assess the function of the auditory nerve and brainstem pathways in response to sound.
Purpose:
- Diagnose hearing loss in newborns, infants, and uncooperative patients
- Detect retrocochlear pathologies (e.g., acoustic neuroma, auditory neuropathy)
- Assess neurological status in coma patients
- Screen for delayed auditory maturation
Who Should Get a BERA?
- Newborns failing OAE screening
- Children with speech delay
- Individuals with suspected auditory neuropathy
- Patients with unilateral hearing loss
- Cases with suspected brainstem lesions
